<image:title>Blog - Dr. K’s Breastfeeding Journey with Anderson - The first time I got to hold my baby,</image:title>
<image:caption>after I was all sewn up, he was already rooting around looking for me. This made me feel so needed, eager, and nervous at the same time. I had already been pumping some colostrum the last week and a half of my pregnancy to try and stimulate labor. So I knew I had a little bit to fall back on if needed. The doctors kept telling me, ‘since he was a big baby, we want to make sure he gets enough to eat early on to prevent too much weight loss in the first couple days’. No pressure or anything… Per usual, my milk took a few days to come in and we blew through the stock of colostrum I had in half a day. Again, I was feeling defeated. We had to rely on some donor breast milk for a day or two until my milk really came in.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Dr. K’s Breastfeeding Journey with Anderson - I am so so so thankful for my mom being by my side postpartum.</image:title>
<image:caption>She got me up multiple times to make sure I pumped between feedings to help my milk come in. She was also so knowledgeable and encouraging when I was trying to get him to latch. As a new mom I was clueless. I took the areoflow lactation classes to learn about schedules, pumping, and breastfeeding. So I had a little bit of background, but I am a learn by doing type of person. When I first got him latched, I bawled like a baby. Yes I’m sure it was a rush of hormones but I finally felt successful for the first time in 24 hours. Or so I thought.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Dr. K’s Breastfeeding Journey with Anderson - When it was time to leave the hospital,</image:title>
<image:caption>I was feeling pretty good about breastfeeding. My milk was coming in strong, I was able to feed him on demand and he would latch every time. The only red flag was that my nipples were starting to crack. I expected them to hurt for a week or two, but I did not think it would hurt this bad. I’m talking about toe curling, breath hitching, butt clenching, wanting to throw my baby off of me pain. All I heard from everyone around me was, ‘oh yeah, I remember those days. It hurts so badly, but it will get better’. All I could think was, how long until it gets better because now my nipples were bleeding.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Dr. K’s Breastfeeding Journey with Anderson - Fast forward 2 months,</image:title>
<image:caption>my nipples had finally healed and I think I had no pain receptors left, but I was finally succeeding! My baby was gaining weight, I still had an over supply because I was pumping and nursing, and it wasn’t painful anymore! YAY! It did take 3-4 weeks for my nipples to callus up from all of the trauma, but we made it through. Something I was now noticing was that he kept spitting up like crazy. I thought it was from the food I was eating or laying him flat too quick after a feeding, so I brought it up to my pediatrician. I knew a little bit about oral ties, but not as much as I now know. When I looked in his mouth I could definitely see a lip tie, but I wasn’t sure about a tongue tie.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Dr. K’s Breastfeeding Journey with Anderson - After everything was done,</image:title>
<image:caption>they were explaining the stretches and scar management to us, but all I was ready to do was try breastfeeding again. Would it feel different? Would he still want to latch? Would we need a lactation consultant to help us? Is this the end of our breastfeeding journey? Would he be mad at me for putting him through this? Most of these intrusive thoughts were irrational, but they were very loud in my head.y you tell your story online can make all the difference.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Dr. K’s Breastfeeding Journey with Anderson - Finally, we were done and I was able to hold my baby again.</image:title>
<image:caption>His face was red and wet from screaming a few minutes before and we headed to the lactation room so he could nurse. It was a little weird at first. He tried to latch, but the numbing gel was still affecting his lips so I had to help him a lot to latch on correctly. When he did finally latch, it was a completely different feeling. He wasn’t chomping down like he used to, his lips were so much more relaxed and he nursed for a solid 20 minutes. When he would normally latch for 30-45 minutes and still seem to want more. Already such a big change!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Dr. K’s Breastfeeding Journey with Anderson - Next was to see if he would spit up after nursing</image:title>
<image:caption>We waited 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes and still nothing. Was this all it took to keep him from spitting up everywhere all the time!? WOW! It definitely was an adjustment for all 3 of us, but I do not regret doing his frenectomy at all. The only thing I regret is not following my gut sooner so he wouldn’t have had to suffer for so long. Fast forward 6 weeks. We were done with all of the stretches, learned how to breastfeed more efficiently, and we were finally getting back to normal. I went back and looked at pictures of Andy before and after the procedure. His upper lip looked so different! I never realized how tight his upper lip was prior to the procedure.</image:caption>

<image:caption>He has been the empowering force in me creating Empowered Life before we even conceived him. He has seen just as many patients as I have. He was my first born son that I hope one day may serve patients like his mommy. However, he has shown so much interest in other things, great thrower for potential baseball player, wants to wrestle like his daddy and extended family has, do "scary" things for the adrenaline rush, build and use tools just like his daddy and maybe even fly a plane or drive a train! He's been my easy kid, the healthy one, the one that eats everything and anything, achieving all his milestones, the one that slept 12 hours straight since 6 months old and is the greatest mommy's help and loves everyone.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - The diagnosis we never imagined</image:title>
<image:caption>Kalum was a champ at taking another set of xrays even though the machine made a scary noise. He did NOT like that it was his hip though, because his knee hurt, not his hip. I had to try to explain to my three-year old that we have to check his hips because that might be the cause of his knee pain. If only I could just say his knee was referral pain from the root cause of it. The doctor was able to review them and come back in to discuss. Once he came in with several other nurses to help take notes, there was something else on that x-ray. He began with, you probably have learned about Perthes Disease in schooling. I want to show you these x-rays because what I was thinking was TS, is not the case. We gotta throw that out the window for his course of care. When he turned his laptop around, I could see it instantly. There was NO doubt his femoral head was misshapen and almost non-existent.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We met with our favorite pediatric physical therapy office, Kinactive Kids in Southlake. Dr. Katelyn and myself have been doing extra training with them recently due to the fact, that they have an amazing practice that co-manages conditions with physical therapy and chiropractic care in such a different way. When I was told to get physical therapy, I knew we would be in good hands with KinActive Health with their expertise on more complicated cases. Dr. Matt and I graduated chiropractic school and is graciously helping me walk through these changes to Kal's body and what we have to do with our adjustments. This collaboration they do is one reason why our office keeps growing with the providers in house and look forward to you all meeting the new staff!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - The 4th Trimester</image:title>
<image:caption>After getting induced at 40 weeks and 3 days, starting pitocin, enduring 14 hours of painful contractions, and spiking a fever, I ended up in the operating room. I was so rattled because this was NOT my plan. I knew everything about vaginal delivery and nothing about c-section recovery because I was determined to do it naturally. Obviously, God had different plans for us. Looking back, I am sad that it didn’t go my way, but I am forever grateful for a happy and healthy baby boy. I am also thankful for my OBGYN, who did my surgery because I had no complications with my scar. I did find out that I am allergic to ChloraPrep. I had a HORRIBLE rash on my belly for 2 weeks following my surgery. The only thing that helped me was the lavender calming balm called Goup. Next came the hardest part. Finding our new normal. How was I supposed to balance healing from major abdominal surgery while learning how to breastfeed, learn how to be a new mom, also be a good wife, and graduate in 2 weeks. All of this was just the first few days of the 4th trimester! Looking back, it is wild how fast I adapted to our new life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>For this story, it goes all the way back to high school where I was very involved in my extracurriculars. Meaning, I would spend 12-14 hours at the school every day. I was a part of 6 different varsity level choirs, on the wrestling and soccer team, participated in musical theater and competed competitively in jump rope outside of school. It was a lot of work, but so exciting at the same time. I pushed myself to do everything I could before graduation, because I knew when I went to college, I wouldn’t have these same opportunities and freedoms. While I was pretty good at everything, I was never the best at anything. This is where my drive for perfection began.</image:caption>

We were able to honeymoon in Jamaica during one of my school breaks, and we flew out the day after our wedding. God truly does work in mysterious ways! <image:caption>made his debut into this world. It wasn’t the way I had planned for it to happen, but I am thankful that he is happy and healthy. C-section pain is NO JOKE! I think it was the worst pain I had ever felt in my entire life!! There is so much power in a woman’s body no matter how you bring your baby into this world. Again, I was feeling like a failure because I had to have a c-section as a holistic doctor. Kind of ironic, huh? Well, that's God keeping us on our toes for ya! However, days go by and cluster feeding kicks in every 30 minutes to one hour…. All day! I cried as my connection with Cohan felt absent. I loved him with all my heart, but I did not feel like we were bonding or getting that mommy-baby connection like I did with Kalum. <image:title>Blog - Newborn Life with Cohan - At Cohan's two week appointment, he still was not back at his birth weight.</image:title>
<image:caption>I was devastated, exhausted and knew at that point, we had to get evaluated for tongue and lip tie. The formation of the lip blister was a big clue on having a lip tie despite trying to flange his lip out with every feeding. I hear it all the time from moms in the office, nursing/feedings are going good - but then hear about weight gain issues, constipation and gassiness, fussiness/colic, not sleeping, latching on and off or simply just hearing clicking during a feed. These are all signs of something else going on. In our case, cluster feeding for several days, the lip blister and not gaining weight by his two week were all signs of needing further evaluation despite all the chiropractic adjustments myself or Dr. Mary Beth could give. Immediately, I got on the schedule with Enclave Dental with Dr. Preetha Thomas for tie evaluation. Dr. Thomas has helped dozens of patients with laser tie revisions and knew I could trust her with my precious little boy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Post-revision, we headed straight to Dr. Mary Beth’s office down the road to get adjusted. This mama was not in the right mindset to adjust her own baby. We headed home and proceeded with our stretches every 2-3 hours, which happened to be the time between feeds now. No more cluster feeding!!! This also meant mama was getting sleep. Daddy was getting sleep. Baby was getting sleep! Things were finally taking a positive turn. Three days post-revision, we had another weight check with our midwife. Cohan had gained 10 oz!!! This was such a relief. No supplementing, no cluster feedings, finally just eating more efficiently and effectively gaining weight! Not only was he gaining weight, the longer stretches of time allowed me to start feeling more normal, get showered and sleep. Each morning after his feed, Cohan began getting happier and staying up to interact which helped my mama heart A LOT.</image:caption>
